Surf City

Surf CityNamed for its coastal location, Surf City was chartered in 1949 and is the largest of the three Island towns, with a year round population of approximately 1,400. Linked to the mainland by a swing bridge, which usually opens on the hour to allow boats to pass through the channel, it is situated on highways 210 and 50 and is the only Island town that spans both Pender and Onslow counties. Governed by a council-manager form of government, the council consists of a mayor and five council members, who appoint the town manager.

Home to the Island's only stop light, Surf City is considered Topsail Island's commercial center and is home to many restaurants, unique shops, and nightclubs, as well as two supermarkets. It is the Island's fastest growing town and has seen an increase in the construction of quality homes and the addition of several new businesses, including two boat storage facilities.

Surf City boasts more than 30 public beach accesses, ranging from a simple access to four accesses with restroom facilities. The town's recent addition of a Soundside park, adjacent to the swing bridge, provides public boat ramps, playground and picnic areas. A playground accompanied by a parking area and restrooms is located at the north end of Surf City, on Broadway Ave. A playground complete with a basketball court and a picnic area can be found at its family park on South Topsail Drive.

One of the Island's three operating oceanfront piers can be found on South Shore Dr., just past the traffic light. In 2005 bike paths were completed from the "S" curve north to the Surf City-North Topsail Beach town line. Sidewalks have been installed from the "S" curve south to the Surf City-Topsail Beach town line.
Additional recent developments include a new community center on the mainland, a satellite annexation for commercial development on U.S. 17 and a number of far reaching infrastructure improvements planned, to carry the town through the next 20 years.

The town plays host to the Surf and Turf Triathlon the third Saturday in May, a grand fireworks display that takes place at the Soundside Park on July 3 and a Christmas tree lighting in November.
