Sneads Ferry
Sneads
Ferry, currently an unincorporated township entirely in Onslow
County, dates back to the early 1700s and was originally known as
Lower Ferry on New River. It later changed to its current name in
honor of Robert Snead, who moved to the area around 1760 and
operated a tavern and a ferry.
The New River, unique as the only river in the U.S. that begins and
ends in one county, is among the widest in the world, for its
length. The river contributes to the economy of the area through the
seafood industry. Another major economic boost to the area comes
through Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The base brings many jobs
and helps diversify the Sneads Ferry economy.
The onset of year-round commercial fishing in the early 1950s and
60s continues to this day, along with party boats for hire, to take
visitors and residents out into the ocean to fish. Fishing is aided
by the rock formations off the coast in Sneads Ferry, which provide
a rich environment for fish of all kinds.
Tourism is now recognized as a major industry, along with fishing.
And, while the area is growing, preservation of the unique character
and quaint, unassuming nature of the area remains at the forefront.
Today Sneads Ferry continues to grow and now boasts a population of
some 5,000. A vibrant community, Sneads Ferry hosts the Sneads Ferry
Shrimp Festival and the King Mackerel Tournament in August. The
Sneads Ferry Community Theater has enjoyed tremendous successes
since its founding in 2001. It is a non-profit organization,
providing live theatre productions and experiences for Onlsow County
and the surrounding communities.
Its home is the Sneads Ferry Community Building, at 126 Park Lane,
site of the Annual Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival. The current season
features live productions for both the amateur and serious
theatergoer alike. For more information, contact the box office at
